Finding a bicycle serial number
- To identify mongoose by serial number cool thanks im learning. Appreciate the help, seems rare from what I know thus far, being a team super.short production.
- Post-BMX Products. Mongoose was sold to American Group in 1985 and marketed by their Service Cycle subsidiary. Bell Sports bought American Group in 1995 and sold Mongoose to Brunswick Outdoor Recreation Group in 1997. Brunswick sold Mongoose to Pacific Cycle in 2000 and Pacific Cycle was bought by Montreal-based Dorel Industries in 2004.
Help - Search - Members - Calendar. Jun 6 2005, 08:53 AM. Can anyone tell me how to decrypt a Mongoose serial number? Ta Neil hutchheaven. Jun 6 2005, 09:16 AM. What is the serial # and then I will tutor you in how to read it. THAT is the kind of stuff that belongs in the BMX Museum! Yep, thats the stuff that belongs in. If the serial starts with an 'M' its NOT a pro class. Pro Class was made in USA. Any mongoose with 'M' was made in the Merida factory in Taiwan Pro Class will have a serial # starting with a letter between 'A' and 'L' It will also have the serial number stamped on the brace behind the bottom bracket and NOT on the bottom bracket itself.
Mongoose Bmx Serial Numbers Lookup Numbers
Most bicycles have their serial number engraved beneath their bottom bracket, but sometimes serial numbers are found in other places. Here are some examples of where and what to look for:
The most complete history of BMX Products, Inc. Presspercent serial code. We have established this site because we have become aware of the many other loyal Vintage Mongoose owners and former owners throughout the world who want information about their Vintage Mongoose bikes. It is a place where you can get technical information about parts, interviews, racers, company.
- The bottom bracket (where serial numbers are typically located) is circled.
- A serial number on the underside of a bottom bracket.
- Another serial number beneath the bottom bracket, aligned parallel to the frame.
- Some Schwinn bicycles have the unique identifying number (their serial number) on the head tube. This is on the front of the bike.
- A serial number located on a rear dropout. Some BMX bikes and a few Schwinn bicycles place the serial on the rear dropout. On older Schwinns there are numbers stamped on both the drive side and non-drive side rear dropouts; the one on the non-drive side dropout is the serial number.
- Some bikes have multiple serial numbers.2When adding a bike to the Index, it's best to enter all the groups of numbers and letters separated by spaces.
Hopefully you can find the serial number on the bicycle you're looking at - email [email protected] if you're having trouble.
Searching serials on Bike Index
Finding bicycles by serial number on Bike Index is a critical part of our functionality. When searching for a serial number, use our serial search bar - it's the second bar on our search form.
We've done a few things to make it more likely that you'll find the bike you're looking for.
- Certain numbers and letters are difficult or impossible to distinguish between (e.g. 0 and O, S and 5). We treat all these numbers the same way - a search for
005LLL
will match a bike with the serialOOS111
. - We split bike serials up by spaces and store each separately. If you see multiple numbers on a bicycle - such as in the photo of the Look bike above - try searching for just one of the numbers at a time. Searching for either
M4106I9CA1
or200910427-2A
will find the bike. - We do close serial matching - bikes with serial numbers that are close to the serial you entered are shown below the matching results under the heading 'Serial Numbers Close to..' - given a search of a serial number with a couple numbers/letters that are different or missing.
- We do not currently do partial serial searches. If you search for
1234
, you will only find bikes with serial numbers of1234
and serials close to that - not a bike with serial number of12345689
.
- Okay, fine, so maybe there are a few bikes without serial numbers, but this is rare and typical only on hand made bikes or really old bicycles.↩
- In this picture 200910427-2A is a manufacturer number and not a serial number. However, to make bikes as easy as possible to find, we'd love it if you entered all numbers you encounter.↩
The first thing everyone wants to know when the buy a second hand GT BMX is ‘how old is it?’ Reading the GT serial number and finding out the build date is an important part of any BMX restoration. Once you now when the old GT BMX bike was built it’s much easier to find out what model it is and also look at the original parts lists and colours from the bike makers catalogues.
A while back I spend some time investigating how to read mid-school and new school serial numbers on Mongoose BMX bikes.
After buying and restoring a number of older mid-school and new school GT BMX bikes I also need to to figure out how to crack the GT serial numbers to get the same build date information.
It didn’t take long to realise there were many similarities when looking at GT serial numbers and Mongoose serial numbers. The placement and sequence of the numbers is stamped in the same place under the bottom bracket. Many of the GT serial numbers start with the same letter sequence. After a bit of digging around online I soon realised that GT BMX bikes and Mongoose BMX bikes were owned by the same company and also made in the same factories in Taiwan. In fact look closely at many Mongoose and GT BMX’s from the around 2000 to 2010 and you’ll see many similarities in frame design and geometry. This is probably not true for all of the bikes in either range, but there were a number of bikes that were identical apart from the logo stamping. Anyway that’s a post for another time.
As with the Mongoose serial numbers there are many posts from forum members around the world on old-school GT serial numbers, but very little on mid-school or new school.
Of course there are also many variations in GT serial numbers and I have focussed mainly on cracking the new-school numbers for now. That is bikes made between 2000 and 2010, and those bikes made in the Taiwan factories with specific serial number sequences. There will be bikes that are different, if you have any examples of where this crack doesn’t work, add a comment below.
GT serial numbers are usually found stamped on the bottom of the bottom bracket of your BMX. This is not always the case and there will be some bikes that do not fit into this formula.

Serial Number
Please note: The GT serial number will give you the build date of your GT BMX. Frames were normally manufactured the year before being sold in bike shops. So a build date on a frame of 2003 usually means the bike was sold in stores in 2004.
If you want to know more about the GT BMX you have, visit our BMX Catalogue website. You'll find all the original catalogue info you need including original parts lists, specs, colours and photos of restored bikes.
